Description:
Album-catalogue Meissner Porzellan / Meissen porcelain (in German).
Written by Otto Walcha. Dresden, 1973.
Today we have the honor to present the world's most authoritative publication on the history of Meissen porcelain - the fundamental album-catalog of the executive class "Meissner Porzellan" by the authoritative German specialist in the history of porcelain-art critic Otto Walch (1901-1968), which was published in Dresden in 1973.
An irreplaceable and valuable catalog-type guide for real collectors of European porcelain with photographs of about 260 masterpieces of the world-famous porcelain from Meissen, the birthplace of European porcelain (period 1710-1972), with a detailed description of 22 types of hallmarks, with a description of 216 types of décor of Meissen porcelain, with a description of the history of the development of German porcelain, with a chronology, with a bibliography, with a name index. The album includes the most interesting and valuable works of German art porcelain. Some of them are published for the first time. The author, Otto Walch, offers a detailed overview of the history of the development of porcelain production in Germany and the history of the collection of priceless collections of Meissen porcelain stored in leading European museums.
It is hard to imagine that until the beginning of the XVlII century, there were no porcelain figurines in European culture at all. But this is true, because they appeared only with the opening of the first porcelain manufactory in the Saxon town of Meissen. The production was supervised by Johann Friedrich Betger - the man who revealed the secret of making an amazing material, known until then only in the mysterious East - in China and Japan.
Since 1710 The first Meissen plastic appears, though not white, but reddish-brown. Clay from the vicinity of Plauen, rich in iron oxide, was used for production. At first, copies of Chinese porcelain were made from red stone mass, then European figurines made of bronze, wood, marble and ivory began to be taken as a model. With the death of Betger in 1719. the "red" time of Meissen ended, the manufactory mastered the production of figurines made of white porcelain. Since 1733, the position of chief fashion designer of the Meissen manufactory passed to Johann Kendler. The hardworking Kendler was able to appreciate the possibilities of porcelain. From the first months of work, the sculptor made a choice - his talent will be embodied in this fantastic material. More plastic than clay, more fragile than glass, harder than ivory and wood, whiter than marble ... Transparent and shining - a product of earth, water and fire. It remains only to breathe life into the shapeless white mass, and under the hands of the master there will be figures, each with its own face and character ...
