An elegant miniature depicting a lady, made in the technique of painting gouache on ivory, surrounded by a brass "wreath", in a velvet frame with moiré upholstery (dense silk or semi-silk fabric with wavy tints of different color shades).
Ivory became widely used as a base for painting in the 18th and 19th centuries as part of the tradition of miniature painting, based primarily in Europe and the United States. Naturally, the translucent material was well suited for the light technique of portraiture. Ivory, derived from the tusks and large teeth of elephants, walruses, and whales, is made up of organic and inorganic dentin components. The drawing is applied in gouache or watercolor.
