Zdenek Matej Kudej, real name Zdenek Marian Kudej (24.11.1881 Goržice - 08.07.1955 Litomyshl) - Czech journalist, traveler, translator and writer. He was a friend of Yaroslav Hašek.

Zdenek Marian Kudej was born to Jan Kudej, a railway civil engineer, and his wife Božena, née Fibičrova. He did not finish his studies at the gymnasium in Příbram. He worked as an intern at a pharmacy in Patsiv and Sadska, then decided to travel. In 1903, he won a ship ticket in Hamburg and went to the United States, where he worked as a laborer, laboratory assistant, dishwasher, farmer, lifeguard, cowboy and gold digger, traveling parts of the United States and Canada as a tramp. Upon his return, he worked in Prague as a bricklayer carpenter and began to gain experience in literature - he soon became a member of the Prague bohemian and a friend of the writer Jaroslav Hašek.
In 1912 he traveled to Russia (he was arrested in Kyiv for resembling a wanted anarchist and spent six months in custody), then wandered around Bohemia with Hašek. He entered World War I only in 1917, but was soon discharged from the army due to a false mental illness. After the war he was engaged in freelance journalistic, literary and translation activities.
In the 20s of the 20th century he lived in Subcarpathian Rus for several years, and after the Second World War he lived in the region around Lipnica and Ledce nad Sazava, where he was one of the brightest and most famous figures. In 1952 he moved to Litomyshl.
