The art of embroidery is a technique and ornamentation that has been invented and improved over the centuries. Some patterns disappeared without a trace, others continued to exist. But each of them had its own semantic purpose - attracting good, protection from evil forces.

Various types of patterns were used in embroidered shirts, but conditionally they could be divided into three groups - geometric, or abstract, animal and plant.

All kinds of triangles, crosses, lines, zigzags and so on were understood as geometric patterns. Similar ornaments were characteristic of all Slavic mythology.

Animals, or zoomorphic groups of patterns, were extremely rare in traditional embroidered shirts. However, images of birds, fish, insects and animals were present to one degree or another on embroidered Ukrainian shirts.
