In 1870-1871, during the Franco-Prussian War, Paris experienced a long siege, which is recognized as one of the largest in the XIX century. During the first half of September 1870, Prussian troops led by Wilhelm I quickly advanced through French lands and completely blocked the capital. The defense lasted for quite a long time, the city's supplies were rapidly running out, and by winter food and fuel ran out. The last attempts to break through the encirclement were made in January 1871. Soon the French capitulated, and on February 17, the Prussian army marched through the central streets of Paris. In these photos, you can see how devastating the siege was for Paris.
