Dear Readers! In one of our previous articles, we presented aureuses of Emperor Trajan Decius, sold on Violity, whose death in a battle with the Goths plunged the Roman Empire into deep crisis. Subsequently, its Western part separated from the empire, which formed the Gallic Empire and the Eastern (bordering on Sassanian Iran), and formed the Palmyra Empire. The rest of the empire was under constant attack from the Goths and other Germanic tribes.

The situation began to change under the Emperor Claudius of Gotha, who received his nickname for the defeat of the Goths, and especially under his cavalry commander Aurelian, who took the throne after the death of Claudius. The bust of Aurelian is shown in Fig. 1 And his aureus we are presenting today. A map of the Roman Empire at the beginning of the reign of Aurelian is shown in Fig. 2. Sirenev marked the territory under the control of the central authorities, yellow in the west and east - the Gallic and Palmyrian empires.

Aurelian ruled from 270 to 275. In this short period, the rebellious empires were defeated and the unity of the empire was restored.

Among the numerous honorary titles that the Senate conferred on Aurelian for his victories, we should especially note the "Restorer of the East", awarded in 274. It is he who is indicated on the reverse of the aureus minted in Antioch. In the center of the reverse is the figure of the Invincible Sun, the supreme deity of the empire under Aurelian.
