Black and white rear admiral's photo Nikolai Arkadievich Golenishchev was sold on Violity's website a little less than a month ago. The picture was taken in 1907 by the Nikolayev photographer L.L. Konosevich.

Despite the fact that the future military man was born far from Nikolaev, his life was inextricably linked with this city and the sea. In adolescence, the son of a famous navigator enters the Black Sea fleet as a cadet. Three years later, already in the rank of midshipman, he floats in the Baltic Sea. During the Crimean War, he took part in raids on warships.

In the winter of 1871, Golenishchev was appointed the duty headquarters officer of the headquarters of the Chief Commander of the Nikolaev port. A little more than six months later, he became the head of the commissariat part of the Main Directorate of the Black Sea Fleet and ports in Nikolaev. He held this position for about 15 years.

Golenishchev was dismissed from service in 1885 with the rank of Rear Admiral.

Living in Nikolaev, he initiated the opening of an orphanage, where the elderly and children found shelter. Golenishchev chaired the city literacy committee, was engaged in the development of the Sevastopol sea library, redirected to Nikolaev in 1855.

At the funeral of Golenishchev, residents of Nikolaev said goodbye to the Rear Admiral, who devoted many years to the life of the city. This happened in the Admiralty Cathedral on Cathedral Square.

It is very rare to find a snapshot depicting a famous person of the past. But by systematically tracking lots in the Photos section of the Violity website, anything is possible.
