Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner Ernest Miller Hemingway achieved worldwide recognition for his incredibly sensual novels and short stories. Many people know the author as a brave adventurer, bullfighting fan, avid fisherman and cat lover. But not everyone has heard that, in addition to writing and journalistic activities, Hemingway was a participant in military conflicts.
During his life, Ernest took part in several wars. These difficult events formed the basis of the most famous books that have become world bestsellers.
After graduating from school, Ernest did not go to study at the university. The United States entered the First World War and the young man volunteered for the front. In Italy, he began to deliver food for the soldiers. But this position did not suit Ernest. He longed for active fighting. The recruit persuaded his superiors to transfer him to the front line.

The future writer pulled out wounded colleagues from the first line. Once, being in the midst of a mortar attack, 19-year-old Hemingway was seriously wounded. 26 shell fragments pierced the soldier's body. Ernest underwent a serious operation, after which he recovered for more than six months. For his courage, the writer was awarded the "Military Cross" and the silver medal "For Valor".
After a while, Ernest said that he had no idea how war could change the psyche. The young man was not mentally prepared for what he had to endure. These events not only hardened him, but also became an inspiration for future works.

Therefore, in 1936-1939, the writer took part in the Spanish Civil War. Ernest concentrated on collecting as many newsworthy stories as possible for his publications. The man was extremely cautious and tried not to climb on the rampage. As a result, the world saw two new works that made a splash: the play The Fifth Column and the legendary novel For Whom the Bell Tolls.
Hemingway could not remain indifferent during the Second World War. In Cuba, Ernest assembled a counterintelligence group, which he led from 1941 to 1943. On his boat, the author tracked down submarines that belonged to the Nazis. Then he emigrated briefly to London, where he studied journalism. But already in 1944, as part of the American army, the writer went to Europe. For some time, Ernest flew bombers in France. Then he threw all his efforts into the execution of ground operations. Soon he was appointed commander of a detachment consisting of 200 partisans from France. For this, the writer was taken under investigation. But for special courage during the execution of difficult military operations, Hemingway was awarded the Bronze Star.
