In our last article, we featured a
sovereign minted during the reign of King George V, a turning point for the British Empire, including the First World War. In a new article, we present the
double sovereign of his predecessor George IV. All British £2 (double sovereign) gold coins are both collectible and investment value. The gold double sovereign was first minted in 1820 for George III, but was not put into circulation, it was a trial coin.
In the reign of George IV in 1823, the coin was put into circulation, many copies are quite well preserved in a worn condition. Another trial version was issued in 1826 for George IV as part of a set of coronation proofs, but like the 1820 version it was not intended to be distributed. George IV ruled Britain from 1820-1830, but actually acted as regent during his father's illness. This period was called the "regency period".
