Over the past year, archaeologists have raised 19 ancient cannons from the bottom of the Savannah River, which flows through the state of Georgia (USA). Lost almost 240 years ago, these
artifacts are believed to have been on a ship that arrived from Europe to the North American continent at the height of the American Revolution of 1765-1783. The weapon was discovered quite by accident during the deepening of the river, which is actively used as a shipping channel. One of the cannons was lifted by a dredge during work, the object was covered with a layer of dirt and rust, and needed a little restoration.
Earlier in this place, archaeologists found the remains of a ship that belonged to the Confederation (1861-1865), but US Navy experts found that the guns were not related to this ship in any way, since they were not used at that time. They were probably brought to prepare for the siege of the city of Savannah in 1779. The city was controlled by the British, who were opposed by the troops of the French and Americans. However, it is unclear exactly which side the guns belonged to. US Army Corps of Engineers archaeologist Andrea Farmer found similarities with weapons made in France in the 1700s. According to another version, the guns were transported by the British, presumably on the ship Savannah or Venus. If so, then Britain may require the delivery of artifacts to it. The finds will soon be shown at the Savannah History Museum.
