Vasilkovskaya majolica has always been an integral part of the arts and crafts of our country. It suffices to recall here that Vasilkov was one of the pottery centers of the Dnieper region as early as the 18th century. Therefore, dishes and decorative items created by Vasilkovites can rightly be called a national cultural heritage.
Industrial production of Vasilkovo ceramics was established in the early 1930s. On the basis of the pottery artel "Keramik", the "Vasilkovsky majolica plant" was organized, the main products of which were initially bowls, pots, plates. Improvement in production technologies, painting dishes with engobes with Ukrainian national ornaments and the introduction of new forms of products made it possible to gradually expand the range of products. This was mainly due to decorative items: since 1948, the production of decorative household utensils and majolica began.
The products were created taking into account the traditions of Ukrainian folk ceramics, therefore they were distinguished by a bright national color. Dishes, souvenirs, animalistic sculptures were decorated with engobes or covered with tints of brown, green, yellow colors. Mostly floral and geometric ornaments were used as decorative elements, images of birds were frequent. Vasilkovsky craftsmen did not forget about relief ornaments and moldings.
In Vasylkiv majolica you can feel the presence of the best folk traditions of different regions of Ukraine. Especially the influence of Chernihiv and Kyiv pottery. The refinement of forms, the use of dark engobe, glazes interspersed with darker or lighter "spots". Juicy painting with large-scale plant elements.
Examples of works by Vasilkov masters can be found on the Violity website in the section
Ceramics. Porcelain. Glass. Among them is the famous
damask rooster, whose “relative” became a symbol of the Ukrainian people’s resilience, having withstood the shelling in Borodianka.
