In 1896, the French art collector Antonin Personnaz joined the ranks of outstanding photographers. By that time, he had already become acquainted with various trends in art and had collected a decent number of paintings. In 1880, a connoisseur of painting became seriously interested in contemporary masters, acquired the works of Edgar Degas, Albert Lebourg, Jean-Francois Raffaelli. In the early 90s, he was in close contact with other collectors who were most interested in impressionism. Personnaz also began to look for the works of innovative artists.

A trip to Florence in 1896 changed a lot in the collector's life. Personnaz first saw the photographs of Constant Puyo and was so impressed that in the same year he joined the French Society of Photography. He himself began to photograph, using the technology of the color autochrome process. The photographs reflect his aesthetic tastes: color images carry an atmospheric depth and an impressionistic mood. The photographer was interested in everyday scenes and nature: bright landscapes with haystacks, flowering trees, fields dotted with flowers, peasants, ladies with umbrellas, as well as other artists who spent time at work. The author of these incredibly gentle photographs did not limit himself to practice and wrote several texts on autochrome technology. He thought about what kind of relationship could be built between two areas close to him - between painting and photography.
