Before launching a new circulating coin into mass production, the company produces test specimens from different metals. Quite often, a soft metal, such as tin or lead, is selected for minting, while their value is very high, since the number of issued copies is limited. In Ukraine, in addition to coins with the usual denominations, including 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 kopecks, 1 hryvnia, there were steps that did not appear in circulation, and 15 kopecks. About the most expensive trial coins of Ukraine sold on Violiti over the past few years, see our channel.

Step coins were named after the money that was in circulation on the territory of Ukraine several centuries ago. During the existence of the UNR, steps were printed, which were used simultaneously as stamps and banknotes. In 1992, as an experiment, the enterprises minted coins in denominations of 1 and 50 steps. There are several varieties of such coins: they differ in thickness, metal (brass, copper, nickel, steel), image size (thick or thin coat of arms). Some coins have small protrusions along the edge around the coat of arms. At the same time, there is no name of the denomination, only the year of minting (“1992”) and the country (“Ukraine”) are indicated.

After lengthy discussions, it was decided to call the monetary units of independent Ukraine kopecks and hryvnias. The rarest trial coins of 2 kopecks contain a reduced pattern, the rest have a standard image. The 5-kopeck trial coins were made at the mint in Italy and have different thicknesses. There are rare varieties with an incorrectly embossed pattern.

Among the coins with denominations of 10, 25 and 50 kopecks, of great interest are specimens produced in the way known as English coinage - with a depressed trident. They were made in 1992 along with ordinary coins with a protruding coat of arms.

Separately, it is worth noting the coins with a face value of 15 kopecks and 1 hryvnia in 1992. 15 kopeck coins, like 3 kopeck coins, were decided not to be put into mass production, although at first they planned. However, 15 kopecks still managed to be released, and several types. Depending on the type, the cost varies from $350 to $700 and may rise in price in the future.

As for 1 hryvnia, the very first one differed from all subsequent ones in the image of the coat of arms, spikelets, denomination, as well as in font. There are a huge number of them, they differ in thickness, edge type, metal, some were minted on blanks intended for the manufacture of 5-kopeck coins. In the same year, a variant appeared, on the basis of which the hryvnia familiar to everyone was released. All trial copies were made from 1992 to 1996, when a single format was finally established.
