The national costume of Ukrainian women, embodying the centuries-old history of the people, is distinguished by a variety of techniques and bright colors. But the traditional image of a Ukrainian woman would be incomplete without incredible neck jewelry. What they were 100-200 years ago you will learn from today's article.

The most ancient and popular type of jewelry in Ukraine is beads. The color, shape, method of wearing and material of the neck jewelry amazed the imagination. The first beads were made from suitable grains, seeds from fruits, and even from fruits of plants. Stone, smalts, corals and metal began to be used much later. Blown glass decorations were in demand: puffers, paciorki. Inexpensive glass products were called lusks due to the risk of cracking the brittle material.

Girls from wealthy families wore "Venetian" or "painted paciorki" - Murano glass jewelry made in Venice. Today, such jewelry is created by craftsmen using the lampwork technique.

One of the most common on the territory of Ukraine were coral beads. They not only had a luxurious appearance, but, according to our ancestors, they had a positive effect on health. Women believed that if the bright and shiny coral fades, then you need to pay attention to your condition.

Beads for amber jewelry were cut and given a perfectly smooth shape with a knife. Large beads in the product were located in the middle, small ones - on the sides. Most often, such specimens were found in the Left-Bank Ukraine. There was a belief among the people that amber beads bring good luck to the owner. Women loved to combine them with coral beads.

Pearl beads adorned themselves mainly girls from the wealthy class. Fashionistas of the past combined them with expensive dresses made of velvet, damask or silk, decorated with gold thread.

The representatives of the fair sex also complemented their image with beadwork. Silyanka, kinglet, braided, kriza - there were many variations. They tried to match the pattern on the jewelry to the pattern of the rest of the clothes.

Another favorite decoration of Ukrainian women was the dukach, which was made in the form of a coin with a metal bow.

On our website, traditional Ukrainian jewelry is presented in the section "Jewellery made of precious metals, stones and bijouterie".
