At the international art fair Art Basel, which was held in June in Switzerland, a giant steel sculpture "Spider", created in 1996 by Louise Bourgeois, was purchased for $ 40 million. This is one of the most expensive works of the artist, another spider, made of bronze, was sold at Christie's a few years ago for $32 million. The three-meter sculpture became the central exhibit of the Hauser & Wirth Gallery of Contemporary Art. The deal took place before the official opening of the fair.
The steel spider is unique because it exists in a single copy. The other six spiders are made of bronze and scattered around the world. Researchers of Bourgeois's work believe that the spider symbolizes the artist's mother, who was a weaver and restored tapestries. The author of the sculpture herself helped her mother in her youth by painting the missing details on damaged objects. Painting and graphics occupied the main place in the work of the young artist, later she focused on sculptures. The bourgeois were interested in different trends in the art of the 20th century: cubism, futurism, abstractionism, the features of which can be seen in different works. Modern sculptures and paintings can be purchased in
