Anna Sobachko-Shostak, master of decorative painting, was born in 1883. The Ukrainian artist, known for her unusual flower drawings, spent her childhood in the village of Veselinovka (now the Kyiv region). She studied at school for only two years, then poverty forced her to look for work with rich peasants. The girl perceived the surrounding nature in a special way, admired the flowers and their shades. When her hands reached drawing, she did not redraw what she saw, but looked for images within herself. In 1910, there were kind and influential people who helped the girl to discover her talent by providing space for creativity and finances. At the same time, Sobachko-Shostak met the artist and exhibition organizer Evgenia Pribylskaya, who highly appreciated the embroidery of the young craftswoman.
Sobachko-Shostak painted in gouache and watercolor, at first she mastered traditional folk painting, then moved on to decorative graphics. Her paintings are bright, asymmetrical, saturated with different colors. In the late 1910s, her style continued to rapidly enrich itself, her work being sent to exhibitions in Prague, Berlin and Paris. In many drawings in the center of the composition you can see a well-known image - the tree of life. Later, ornamental elements are added in the form of stems, leaves, buds with characteristic outlines.
A new period in the work of Sobachko-Shostak began in the 1930s. and continued until her death in 1965. The artist's drawings formed the basis of decorative panels. In Kyiv, she participated in the competition of Ukrainian folk decorative painting and won. Her works have graced a series of postage stamps that have appeared on Violity more than once.
