We regularly present outstanding coins of the Middle Ages . But today is a special case. We present a coin minted in the city of Florence, named after the city florin .
For the first time, the regular minting of gold coins of standard weight in Medieval Western Europe began precisely in Florence in 1252. This is explained by the fact that since the 10th century the city has become the center of activity of financiers, for example, the banking houses of Bardi and Peruzzi. The flower-coat of arms of Florence is depicted on the coin. After Florence, the coin was issued by many states of Italy, as well as the Papal State. Under the name ducat, sequin or gulden (goldgulden), the coin was minted in Venice, the cities of Germany, Hungary, England, and France. The name florin was carried by many coins up to the present. The name of the Hungarian currency - forint also comes from the word florin. John the Baptist is depicted on the coins of Florence. Coins of other states contain images of saints revered in the area. Gold coins of the Medieval states must be looked for in this section .
