Tyrannosaurus rex 'relative' skeleton sold for over $6 million at Sotheby's

Tyrannosaurus rex 'relative' skeleton sold for over $6 million at Sotheby's
Sotheby's New York auction became the venue for the sale of a unique exhibit - a dinosaur skeleton, which went under the hammer for more than $ 6 million.
The fossilized remains of Gorgosaurus - a "relative" of the tyrannosaurus, consisted of 79 bone elements. Their height and length were 3 and 6.7 m, respectively. The presumed place of discovery of the skeleton was the American state of Montana.
An anonymous buyer got the opportunity to come up with a nickname for the extinct predator. After all, this is the only such copy that was put up for auction for sale in private hands. And, if other similar exhibits, as a rule, had “names” at the time of the auction, then this one does not. Previously, such sales were not recorded.
According to experts, there are about 20 similar fossils in the world. It is noted that the sale of the Gorgosaurus skeleton is the second in the history of the Sotheby's auction. The first dinosaur, named Sue, went to the Chicago Museum 25 years ago and cost $8.3 million at the time.
If we return to the history of giant lizards, then Gorgosaurus lived about 77 million years ago. They, like tyrannosaurs, had huge heads, a large number of curved teeth, and short front legs. Unlike their "older brothers", the Gorgosaurus were fiercer and more agile. With their strong bites, they cut the skin of the victim and penetrated deep into her flesh.
Other natural history-themed lots included the teeth of a tyrannosaurus rex and a saber-toothed tiger, and the skull of a Triceratops.
You can find unique exhibits of a similar theme for your collection on Violity. More than 1.5 thousand active lots are presented in the section "Fossils, geology, exhibits of flora and fauna. Meteorites. Aquarium".
