2 million euro drawing: Artcurial auction sells original Tintin comic book cover
One of the latest interesting sales at the French Artcurial auction is the original cover for Hergé's Tintin in America (1942), which sold for 2.158 million euros. Despite the fact that the estimate amounted to 2.2-3.2 million euros, the total amount is also very impressive.
The cover was drawn in ink, graphite and blue pencil, its color version was published in 1946. Tintin in America is the third volume of a 24-volume collection of writings about a young reporter. The first complete edition of the volume was published in 1932 and was reprinted several times under different covers. The issues collected in this volume were printed in 1931-1932. on the pages of the Le Petit Vingtième supplement to the Belgian newspaper Le Vingtième Siècle.
Hergé (Georges Prosper Remy) is a Belgian artist known for his graphic stories about the journalist Tintin, translated into more than fifty languages. The prototype of the protagonist was the Danish actor and traveler Palle Huld, who won the competition of the newspaper Politiken. The 15-year-old traveled around the world in 44 days and became the perfect prototype for an adventure comic.
