A rare 1400-year-old folding chair was unearthed.

In Bavaria, the grave of a woman from the early Middle Ages was found, in which an unexpected find, an iron folding chair, was discovered. There are only a few similar copies in Europe.
The folding chair dates back to the year 600.

In Endsee (Middle Franconia), at a construction site in a park, a group of archaeologists excavated on behalf of the Bavarian State Department for the Protection of Monuments, where they found a woman's grave. The grave was at a depth of about two meters, 1.3 by 2.7 meters. Experts found an iron frame, and later found out that it was a chair. Its dimensions are 70 by 45 cm, and it dates back to approximately 600 BC.

"This is the second find of an early medieval iron folding chair in Germany! This find, which at first glance seems so modern, IS an absolute rarity and is of the greatest cultural-historical interest, as it gives an idea of the burial inventory of prominent strata of the population and the early use of furniture," says the chief architect of the department.

This chair was obviously grave goods in a female burial. According to the initial anthropological analysis, the woman from the burial was 40-50 years old. She wore a belt with a large millefiori bead and spindle whorl, and around her neck a necklace of colored glass beads. The folding chair was located. near the feet, and a rib of a cow, which was probably a meat offering, was also discovered nearby.

Parallel to the woman's grave, a man's grave was also discovered. There, archaeologists discovered a belt with a bronze buckle, a fanny pack, and weapons such as a spear and a shield.

Such chairs are very rare. In research, they are described as "special gifts". The presence of a chair in the grave indicates a high social status or position. Chairs are found mainly in women's graves. To date, only 29 early medieval graves with folding chairs have been discovered across Europe, and only six of them are iron.
Because most of the finds contained only parts, such as nails or wood, ivory or leather or cloth, archaeologists for many years mistook them for something else. Although, historians know that folding chairs made of bronze and iron have been made since Roman antiquity.

Today, restorers are engaged in the study of the chair. Specialists hope to see what the chair looked like with the help of an X-ray. It is assumed that it was decorated.
