Strange finds related to the Vikings

Strange finds related to the Vikings
Near the city of Köping in Sweden, archaeologists are excavating a Viking cemetery. Something interesting was discovered in February of this year.

The hilts of the swords were sticking out of the ground, which was strange. It turned out that these were swords that were stuck vertically into the ground above the two graves. The swords belonged to the Vikings and remained in this position for more than 1,200 years.

An archaeologist at the National History Museum says: “Viking age graves with swords are very rare. Graves where swords were installed in a vertical position are even rarer.»
A rare find.
A rare find.
Examining the question of why the swords were stuck in the ground vertically, considering that it took a lot of force to drive the sword through the hard ground and large stones on top of the grave, researchers propose hypotheses: “Perhaps it was a gesture to help the dead warriors travel to Valhalla. Perhaps it was also a way of commemorating the dead. Family members who visited the graves could touch the hilts of the sword, thus maintaining a close connection with the dead."
Viking graves.
Viking graves.
The research team will have to work with the findings to find out more, and even now we can assume how much we still do not know about the burial rituals of the Vikings and their way of life.
