Landscape shots of the Isle of Skye in the first half of the 20th century
Skye is one of the islands of the Inner Hybrids archipelago (Scotland). These lands have been inhabited since the Mesolithic. The Norwegians lived here for a long time, the Vikings gave the island the name Skuy, or Misty Island. In the XVIII century, the land was deserted after the suppression of the Jacobite uprising - supporters of the English King James II. Farms where sheep were bred appeared on the site of large communities. At the beginning of the 19th century, the population was 20 thousand inhabitants, and by the end of the last century it had decreased to 9 thousand people. In recent decades, the number of inhabitants of the Isle of Skye has been growing again.
Medieval monuments remain on the island, for example, Dunvegan Castle, built in the 13th century by the MacLeod clan. It has survived to this day, today there is a museum here. Another castle - Armadale, founded in the 18th century by the Macdonald clan, has become a major tourist center. Other castles are destroyed, however, they are of interest to travelers.
The series of photographs presented below was taken at the beginning of the last century. These are mainly mountain landscapes that prevail on the island.
