Renovating a kitchen and finding an ancient painting: the story of an unexpected find of national significance
Stories related to finds during repair work are not unique. This case is just about that. British Luke Budworth found an example of an ancient painting.

However, a fragment of something unusual was first seen by contractors who moved a cabinet that had been in place for years. If not for decades. The owner of the house decided that there should be something similar from the opposite part. And he was right.
The Briton had noticed a wobbly piece of wall before, but thought there were pipes behind it. As soon as the contractors pointed this out, Budworth took a different angle. And the first thought was Victorian wallpaper.

However, upon examination of the find, it was discovered that this painting dates from 1660 and depicts scenes from the 1635 book Emblems by the poet Francis Quarles. And as Historic England's senior architectural researcher for the region points out, the find is of national importance and in the context of York, where domestic wall paintings are quite rare, they are of particular interest.
