In Imprimer! L'Europe de Gutenberg: the history of printing at an exhibition in Paris
April 12 at the National Library of France (Paris) launched the exhibition In Imprimer! L'Europe de Gutenberg, dedicated to key moments in the history of printing. Despite the name of the event, some of the exhibits presented here were published outside of Europe. For example, the oldest book printed using metal molds appeared in Korea in 1377. We are talking about Chikchi (Jikji) - a Buddhist text that outlines the basic doctrine for teaching youth.
Among the works of the first European printers, one can see a fragment of the oldest woodcut woodblock, Bois Protat, created at the end of the 14th century. A crucifix is carved on the surface, but only a small part with the hand of Christ remains from the drawing. At hand is a centurion, pronouncing the phrase "Vere filius Dei Eratiste" ("It really was the son of God"), and two soldiers. Of course, the exhibition also showed the Gutenberg Bible, printed in the 1450s.
In total, the exhibition includes 270 items, the result of numerous trials and errors. Throughout the 15th century, letterpress workshops were like laboratories, where experiments were in full swing, and the technology of book publishing was improved. Special attention is paid to the distribution of finished products, methods of delivering texts to readers.
