RECORD PRICE: RARE WASATCH GASOLINE STATION SIGN SOLD FOR $324,000 AT MOPHY AUCTION
Morphy Auctions' Automobilia, Petroliana & Railroadiana (March 21-23) unveiled a collection of vintage oil marks and petroliana formerly owned by collector Bobby Knudsen Jr.
The four most expensive items were sold for close to $1.1 million.
More than 1600 lots from the Knudsen collection and other consignments were presented at this auction. The collection is valued at over $8.1 million (including buyers' premiums). Among the ten most expensive lots, signs depicting Indians prevailed,
among which is the unique double-sided sign Wasatch Gasoline (Salt Lake City, Utah), which sold for a record $324,000. The sign was 48 inches in diameter, and its preliminary valuation ranged from $75,000 to $150,000.
A Mohawk Gasoline "down feather" sign of a pre-1925 reversible porcelain was sold next to it for $312,000.This is one of only four known examples of advertising signs used in the historic San Francisco brand, and was estimated to be between $100,000 and $200,000.
Among the other most expensive lots at the auction were signs of Atlantic Gasoline, Sinclair HC and others.
This auction is one of the most successful in the history of Morphy Auctions, demonstrating significant collector interest in Petroliana and Petroleum Antiques.
