New finds in Carlisle: fragments of statues found among the ruins of the bath
During excavations of an ancient Roman bath in the English city of Carlisle, two large sandstone heads dated to the 3rd century BC were discovered. n. e. Each artifact is three times the size of an ordinary human head. Apart from these finds, other parts of the statues are missing. Given the size of the heads, the height of one such statue could be 3.6–4.5 meters.
Both heads lay next to a paved Roman road that fell into disuse around the 5th century. Researchers believe that the fragments of the statues were spolia - parts of ancient structures used as building materials. Perhaps, in a later period, the inhabitants of the surroundings dismantled the bathhouse, took away everything suitable for construction, and left the heads by the road.
The inscriptions found among the ruins indicate the connection of this bath with Septimius Severus and Yulia Domna. It is likely that both statues were dedicated to them. According to another version, the figures depicted gods. According to archaeologist Frank Giecco, the find is extremely rare in Britain and unique in Carlisle. And if small figures constantly fall into the field of view of archaeologists, large statues are a very unusual phenomenon.
