Viking jewelry found by metal detector sells for $19,300
In London, at the auction house Noonans Mayfair, on July 18, a bronze Viking bone dating from the 11th century was sold. This bone was discovered in a field in Norfolk, England by a metal detector. The final bid was £15,000 (approximately $19,300) and was made by a UK collector.
Jason Jones, 44, who works in the construction industry, purchased a metal detector for his son Rio on his 15th birthday. A few weeks later, the rest of his family joined in the treasure hunt, including daughters Ela and Leah, and began to spend time searching every weekend.

Jones recalls: “On January 29 this year, my wife Lisa and I were walking with a metal detector in a field in Norfolk where two medieval silver coins had previously been found. I forgot to charge my main metal detector, so I had to use a backup device, an old model Minelab Vanquish 540. I returned to the place where the coins were found and received a loud signal. At a depth of only two inches, I found an unusual bronze object. Lisa came up and was dumbfounded when she saw it. Neither of us had the slightest idea what it could be, but in the evening, after we posted the photo on Facebook, we realized that this is the origin of the Vikings, and informed the local archaeologist to register it."
Jones intends to share the money with the land owner and use his share to support his family.
