Mosaics of 1960s artists destroyed in Mariupol
The other day it became known about the strong destruction of unique mosaics in Mariupol. In 1967, in the restaurant "Ukraine", several artists created two beautiful wall art works: "Tree of Life" ("Tree of Life") and "Kestrel" ("Boriviter"). The team was led by Alla Gorskaya and Viktor Zaretsky, her husband. For about two months they worked on the interior, and during this time they created two beautiful compositions that were completely different from the works in the spirit of socialist realism that prevailed at that time.
After Gorskaya's death in 1970, the Tree of Life was completely bricked up and forgotten for several decades. In 2008, a masterpiece of Ukrainian mosaic art was again shown to the world. Over the past few years, the compositions have remained inaccessible to the general public, but their condition was very satisfactory. And now the enemy shells got the cultural heritage. Although a significant part of both mosaics has been preserved, the walls are damaged, and with them large fragments of works are irretrievably lost. It is worth noting that before the war, various mosaics could be seen throughout Mariupol. Now it is not known how many compositions are left in the city.
Alla Gorskaya combined elements of folk art, the Ukrainian avant-garde of the 1920s, and the experience of the Kyiv academic school. She worked on sketches for theater productions that were banned by the Soviet authorities. Gorskaya's husband, Viktor Zaretsky, often became her co-author, opened his own studio and developed a pedagogical system.
Works of art, including painting, graphics and sculpture, you can purchase on Violity and save for future generations in your collection.
