Interesting lot. Antique silver H. Upmann cigar box
Although cigar smoking is no longer as popular as it was in the century before last, its paraphernalia still attracts attention - especially if they are more than a hundred years old. Some of the most artistically interesting accessories are tabletop cigar boxes, aka cigar holders.

The mass appearance of these items in the U.S. market was due to the law of 1846, which obliged to pack cigars in boxes. In the Russian Empire, cigar boxes became fashionable around the 1870s and were in demand until the Revolution.

Wooden, porcelain, brass, copper, silver and even gilded, they soon became popular collectors' items.

American President John F. Kennedy was a passionate fan of this brand. A few hours before the US government imposed a total embargo on trade with Cuba, Kennedy asked an aide to buy as many H. Upmann cigars for him as possible. He managed to get 1,200 of them and later wrote about it in his memoirs.
