Winter Carpathians and their inhabitants in photos from the collection of the National Digital Archive of Poland
In the depths of the Carpathians, where nature meets history and culture, hide unforgettable moments of the past. The National Digital Archive of Poland stores black-and-white photographs taken between the 1920s and 1930s.
These photos not only reflect the beauty of the Carpathian Mountains and the lifestyle of their inhabitants, but also provide an opportunity to delve into the culture of the region at the beginning of the 20th century.

The black-and-white pictures of the Carpathians reveal pictures of nature that impress with their beauty and grandeur. Mountain peaks covered with snow give the landscapes a sense of mysticism. Forests with green caps abound on a white background. Small villages spread deep in the mountains...
For example, these photos record the life of the inhabitants of one of the centers of Hutsul culture, Verhovyna, or as it was once called Zhabye. It is located in the south of Ivano-Frankivsk region. The village was called Verkhovyna in 1962. This, by the way, introduced a certain ambiguity.

Verkhovyna is the name of a highland, Kosiv region and Nadvirnyan region, and other highland areas could be called that in songs, and the name Jabie had a history of several centuries. The old name is still used by the inhabitants of the village, it appears in songs and folklore.
Archive photos recorded the life and culture of the inhabitants of the Carpathians in the period between the two great wars. In the images you can see ordinary villagers, their traditional houses and clothes, ways of moving. They convey the atmosphere of that time and tell stories about the work on the land, traditional holidays and rituals that were rooted in the culture of these places.

Black-and-white photographs of the Carpathians and their inhabitants from the collection of the National Digital Archive of Poland provide an opportunity to travel through time and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of life and culture of this unique region.
