In the work of the Ukrainian master Dmitry Golovko, love for folk fairy tale motifs is clearly expressed. The artist was born in 1905 in Uman, at the age of 15 he entered the local school of folk art, where he studied drawing, painting and pottery. His first works began to appear at exhibitions in those years when he studied at the Kyiv Technological Institute of Ceramics and Glass. Having achieved the first creative successes in the 1920s and 1930s, he understood in which direction he needed to move on.
For many years, Golovko preferred exclusively handmade work. He created ceramic products, paying attention to numerous smallest details. However, in the 1950s, the artist offered to organize a mass production of his works. Thus, his replicated items became available to the general public. These are dishes, and decorative sculptures of animals (lions, lambs, deer), and children's toys.
Each clay lamb, each goat has a unique character. They are like living fairy-tale creatures from folk tales. They can also be used as dishes: pour water or wine. However, it is unlikely that you will want to use them constantly, they are very inconvenient. But to decorate the interior or replenish the collection of ceramics, they are definitely worth buying.
Golovko continued to work until the mid-1970s. His works can be seen in museums in Ukraine, Italy, USA, Canada, Poland, Finland, Japan, etc. At European exhibitions of the 60s, the master was awarded gold medals for several exhibits presented to the public. For 20 years Golovko taught, among his students was Valery Protoriev, the author of the cockerel, which became famous throughout the world, released by Vasilkovskaya majolica.
