Potpourri - porcelain masterpieces from Sèvres

Potpourri - porcelain masterpieces from Sèvres
In the middle of the 18th century, the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory produced pot pourri à vaisseau, a vase in the form of a nave (a ship-like table decoration). The sculptor Jean-Claude Duplessis worked on the first vase. This is one of the most famous projects of the manufactory, which attracted the attention of connoisseurs of art: several pot-pourries ended up in the collections of Madame de Mompadour and her brother, the Marquis de Marigny.
The vase was used to scent rooms. Inside the pot-pourri were mixtures of various ingredients, the smell escaping through holes in the lid. Outside, they are decorated with images of scenes with chinoiserie motifs (Chinese style), naval scenes from Dutch painting, etc.
Potpourries are very rare and valuable and were very difficult to make due to their specific design. Numerous holes in the upper part form an openwork structure, which crumbled easily in the oven. In total, just over a dozen of these incredible vases were made, exactly ten have survived.
English collectors showed particular interest in pot-pourri: in the 19th century, all ten copies were in England. Today, the British keep five porcelain vases, four can be seen in museums in the United States, one in France.
