How the city of Skole looked at the beginning of the 20th century
Skole is a small cozy town in the Lviv region with a rich history. Once upon a time, Celtic tribes lived here, and at the beginning of the 10th century a Slavic settlement arose. Skole prospered thanks to trade: a trade route from Volhynia to Transcarpathia passed through the settlement. By the middle of the 13th century, fortifications were built around the city, but in 1241 Skole was destroyed by a large Mongol army.
For the first time, the name Skole is found in 1397, in a letter from the Polish king Vladislav II Jagiello, who wanted to transfer the land to his brothers, but the city passed to the voivode Jan Tarnovsky. In the XVI-XVII centuries. trouble came here more than once: the inhabitants survived the invasion of the Tatars, and then the attack of the Hungarians. In 1772, Austrian troops entered Skole, and 30 years later German artisans began to settle here en masse. In 1885, the Stryi-Skole railway line was launched, which was completed two years later to Mukachevo.
One of the most interesting historical places in Skole is the Gredel Palace, built in neo-baroque style. The palace was erected in the middle of the 19th century, and expanded a few decades later. At the end of the 19th century, these lands were owned by the barons Gredel, who controlled the local industry. A boarding school has been functioning here since the middle of the last century.
Unfortunately, we cannot see Skole throughout its history, however, there are photographs of the city taken at the beginning of the last century.
