Guardian of Ukrainian culture Stefan Taranushenko

Guardian of Ukrainian culture Stefan Taranushenko
In December 1889, the historian Stefan Taranushenko was born in Lebedin (Sumy region). The scientist sacrificed a lot to preserve knowledge about Ukrainian folk art, called for an integrated approach in the study of our culture. He was interested in architecture, painting, various techniques for creating pysanky, collected an impressive archive of photographs (over 5,000) and drawings.
During the 20s of the last century, Taranushenko worked in Kharkov, studied local architecture. The fruits of his labors were the books "Old Hats of Kharkiv" (1922) with photographs, sketches and diagrams, "The Intercession Cathedral near Kharkiv" (1925), etc.
In 1929, the historian edited the first editions of the series "Ukrainian painting", published by the publishing house "Rukh", which is worth a little more detail. Founded in 1917, the publishing house published works by Ukrainian writers: the 8-volume edition of Gnat Khotkevich, the 9-volume edition of Olga Kobylyanska, the 30-volume edition of Ivan Franko and many other authors. Against the background of the rooting of the Soviet ideology, Rukh tried in every possible way to massively distribute the works of pre-revolutionary poets, prose writers and playwrights. At the same time, monographs on the theory of art were published.
The active work of the publishing house did not go unnoticed by the Soviet authorities. In 1933, Rukh was forcibly closed, and Taranushenko was arrested. Of course, there was a fabricated case: the scientist was imprisoned for five years, depriving him of his scientific degree. For 20 years, the researcher lived in Transbaikalia, and only after the death of Stalin returned to Ukraine. He moved to Kyiv, where he was able to take up a position as a researcher at the Academy of Architecture. And only in 1958, after the review of the case, Taranushenko was fully rehabilitated.
Taranushenko was familiar with Nikolai Glushchenko, Elena Kulchitskaya, Georgy Narbut and other artists, maintained friendly relations with them, popularizing their work.
