'In the Light of Rome': 19th-Century Photo Exhibition Opens at Bowdoin College
The Art Museum of Bowdin College in Brunswick (Maine, USA) hosts the exhibition "In the Light of Rome", which presents unique photographs of the capital of Italy. The exhibition includes 112 photographs taken by photographers from around the world during 1842-1871. Previously, these works have not been exhibited or published anywhere.
The photographs were provided by John F. McGuigan, Jr., who has amassed one of the largest private collections of images of 19th-century Rome outside of Italy: daguerreotypes, calotypes, and negatives. Among them are the works of Joseph-Philiber Giraud de Prangy, Calvert Richard Jones, Frederic Flacheron, Adriano de Bonis and others - all of them paid special attention to architecture and ancient ruins. Looking at the same object, which fell into the field of view of several photographers, one can follow the development of the emerging art.
Among the sights are the Basilica of St. Peter, the Arch of Titus, the temple of Antoninus and Faustina, the arch of Septimius Severus next to the Church of Saints Luke and Martina. All 112 photographs made it to the pages of the catalog published by the beginning of the exhibition. The extensive commentary examines the history of photography, its evolution and commercialization in the second half of the 19th century. The exhibition will run until June 4, 2023.
