Heritage of an ancient civilization: artifacts of Trypillia culture
Trypillian culture, which flourished in the 5th-3rd millennium BC. e., famous for artifacts found in different parts of Ukraine. One of such places of accumulation of artifacts was the Verteba cave in the Ternopil region, located near the village of Bilche-Zolotoe. The length of the underground passages connecting the wide galleries reaches 9 km. The first serious archaeological study of Verteba was organized in 1876, and since then scientists have repeatedly arrived here to make new discoveries. Thousands of objects were found in the caves: ceramic dishes, figurines in the form of men, tools, bone and stone products. Today in Verteb there is an underground museum of Trypillia culture.
One of the features of this ancient culture was developed settlements - proto-cities. In the largest settlements, the number of inhabitants reached 25 thousand people. However, such cities did not exist for long, several decades. At some point, all buildings (several hundreds, or even thousands of buildings) were burned, and the Trypillians moved to another place.
Pottery has reached a high level. Masters created pear-shaped dishes in which they kept grain, bowls, pots, figurines. Easily recognizable are characteristic miniature models of buildings and binoculars that could serve as supports for containers. Objects were sculpted by hand, as well as using a potter's wheel.
Archaeologist Vikentiy Khvoyka occupies a special place among the researchers of Trypillia culture. In 1896, he participated in excavations, during which he classified the finds and determined the period of the existence of the culture. Khvoyka wrote about Trypillians in a work devoted to excavations in 1901 near Kanev and Rzhishchev.
