Van Dyck painting bought for $600 went under the hammer for $3 million
A sketch by the 17th-century Flemish painter Anthony van Dyck, which depicts the author of the canonical Latin translation of the Bible, Saint Jerome, went under the hammer at Sotheby's for $3.075 million. The work was discovered at the end of the last century in an old farmhouse in Kinderhook (New York, USA). In 2002, collector Albert Roberts bought the painting for $600. After the death of the collector in 2021, they decided to sell the painting, and it took two years for it to get to the new owner.
The authenticity of the work was confirmed in 2019, when Roberts took it for examination. For the author, the sketch was very important, since the artist created it at the stage of his formation, during his studies with Paul Rubens.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the painting will go to the Albert Roberts Foundation, which provides financial assistance to artists and charities. The sale took place as part of the Master Paintings Part I auction, which also included works by Agnolo Bronzino, Titian and Melchior de Hondekuter.
