From "Russian Dancer" to "Dancer in Ukrainian Dress": The Metropolitan Museum of Art changed the name of Edgar Degas's pastels
Recently, there has been a boom in changing the names of works of art, captions to them, as well as clarifications, if not complete changes in the author's belonging to any country. Two recent examples of Malevich and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Repin, Kuindzhi and Aivazovsky at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, confirm this.

But the last museum continued the path of changes - the name of one of Edgar Degas's pastels from "Russian Dancer" was replaced with "Dancer in Ukrainian Dress". This is the second work of art that has been "reclassified" since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The National Gallery in London carried out a similar renaming last year. She was also supported by the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, updating an old article on its website, indicating that the Degas dancers were Ukrainian, not Russian.

The director of the Metropolitan Museum supplemented his decision with a comment about the rapid development of scientific thinking. The increase in awareness and attention to Ukrainian culture and history after the start of a full-scale invasion is doing its job.
