Loneliness in the City: Melancholy Paintings by Edward Hopper

Loneliness in the City: Melancholy Paintings by Edward Hopper
Edward Hopper (1882–1967) was an American artist who, like no one else, was able to convey through his paintings the feeling of loneliness experienced by people in large cities. Hopper experimented with styles, creating etchings for a while, but devoted most of his time to painting. Despite active creative searches, he opposed abstractionism, considered such art untenable, preferring genre painting.

Having lived most of his life in New York, the artist knew what it was like to feel alone among thousands and thousands of people. Endowing his works with special symbolism, the master conveyed melancholy and boredom through his paintings, putting his own emotions even into inanimate objects.
A lover of theater and cinema, Hopper dedicated a number of paintings to the theatrical scene. The Sheridan Theater is a prime example of watching lonely people: instead of a noisy crowd and a captivating performance, we see a few figures in the semi-darkness. Often the artist was posed by his wife, Josephine Nivison Hopper, whom he portrayed against the wall in one of the cinemas. Despite the empty seats, the lady is in no hurry to join the rest of the audience.
Night Owls is one of Hopper's most famous paintings, in which two figures stand side by side - the artist and his wife. Although the picture is a group one, each of the visitors of an inexpensive establishment is immersed in himself, not paying attention to others, and the employee, distracted from his work, looks into the distance. The lack of access to the street intensifies the atmosphere, which creates a feeling of isolation.
Hopper often depicted women on canvases. Below are some typical such works: “Girl at the sewing machine”, “Hotel room”, “Automatic machine” (automatic machines are fast food restaurants popular in the USA without attendants).
