Forgotten for 40 years, and then remembered: the results of the study of the most ancient fabric
The oldest tartan was discovered about 40 years ago in one of the peat bogs in Scotland. And, although the researchers cannot give an exact conclusion, one of the assumptions is the following — this tartan may have belonged to a representative of the Chisholm clan, which at that time controlled this territory.

To determine the exact age of the find, the researchers used dye analysis and radiocarbon dating of the wool from which the fabric was made. And, despite the fact that the dating procedure lasted about 6 months, the results were worth it.

The size of the sample found 40 years ago is quite significant – about 55 cm by 43 cm, and for its coloring at one time four colors were used, which faded over time: green, brown, yellow and possibly red.

Based on the research, archaeologists also managed to determine the approximate age of the find. The range is quite wide – between 1500 and 1655, however, researchers are more inclined to date the fabric from 1500 to 1600.

The dating confirms the fact that this tartan is the oldest found in Scotland.

Further tissue studies will help shed light on other aspects of this find.
