Amazing frescoes on the walls of Villa Boscoreale

Amazing frescoes on the walls of Villa Boscoreale
The exposition of the Metropolitan Museum of Art has a special exhibit - frescoes from the bedroom, which was part of the Villa Boscoreale. In the middle of the 1st c. BC e. in southern Italy, not far from Pompeii, a villa was built that stood for a little more than half a century and was destroyed due to the eruption of Vesuvius. The ruins of the building were discovered at the end of the 19th century; the find immediately attracted the attention of researchers from all over the world with its amazing images that adorned the walls. Another important find was a treasure: more than a hundred gold and silver items, which are now kept in the Louvre and the British Museum.

The artist depicted architectural and garden compositions, creating the effect of presence with the help of shadows and other means of optical illusion. The objects of everyday life are arranged on the frescoes in such a way as to appear real. The frescoes were supposed to impress the guests of the wealthy owner of this cozy summer estate. Such houses were often used to showcase the beauty of Hellenistic art. Roman aristocrats wanted to see portraits of Greek philosophers and poets on the walls. Therefore, according to the researchers, on the wall of one of the rooms of the Villa Boscoreale there are portraits of Epicurus and Zeno, and also, possibly, Kinir, the mythical ruler of Cyprus.

The frescoes survived the cataclysms thanks to the technologies that the author used. The reddened yellow ocher indicates that the temperature in this place reached 300 ° C. The Metropolitan Museum of Art made a complete reconstruction of the original work of art. Some walls are missing - like other artifacts, they are in the Louvre. However, experts from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, together with colleagues from King's College London, have developed a virtual model of the villa, connecting the individual parts of the complex, based on notes made during excavations in 1902.
