Chance find under the kitchen table: a collection of 264 gold coins was found in the north of England
A North Yorkshire couple discovered an extraordinary find while remodeling their kitchen in an 18th-century mansion. A pot of gold coins that was about the size of a Coca-Cola can.
The archaeologists who arrived at the site were able to find 264 gold coins dated to the period of the reign of James I of England. In total, the find was valued at £250,000.

According to researchers, the collection of coins once belonged to an influential trading family from Hull, engaged in the import and export of iron ore, coal and timber. The last generation of this family had considerable influence in political circles.
Experts have dated the coins to 1610, covering the reign of the Stuart dynasty. These are the rarest examples of artifacts from the Civil War in England.

One of the coins depicts the image of James I, who appeared in the form of a Roman emperor. Another, according to archaeologists, came from Brazil. The latest coin is dated 1727. This allows archaeologists to roughly date the burial of the collection.
The age of the latest coin from the hoard played a role. Since it was less than three centuries old, the North Yorkshire couple who discovered the coins were able to put their find up for auction.
