Amethyst, onyx, pearls: Edward Oakes' jewelery masterpiece

Amethyst, onyx, pearls: Edward Oakes' jewelery masterpiece
This box is the work of 20th-century American jeweler Edward Everett Oakes, a member of the Society for Arts and Crafts in Boston. It is made of silver and gold, decorated with amethysts (143 stones), Japanese pearls (86 pearls) and onyx (88 stones). The box stands on a two-tier pedestal made of laurel wood. The surface of the lid is crossed by two pairs of amethysts, in the very center there is a large faceted amethyst with rays of onyx and pearls at the corners. The side walls and ribs of the box are decorated with onyx. Gemstones pair beautifully with graceful gold leaf arrangements. Inside the box is also decorated with amethysts and pearls, the walls are lined with black velvet.
Edward Oakes has long dreamed of creating a masterpiece with floral patterns and expensive stones. The master spent a lot of effort searching for material that was mined in South America, Asia and Siberia. While working with the box, the jeweler encountered a difficulty: it was necessary to fix the jewelry in such a way as not to damage the leafy settings and silver walls. The entire process of making the box took 9 months, and in October 1929 it was demonstrated at the Society of Arts and Crafts.
Experts recognized this work as the most outstanding achievement of the artist. However, no one was able to buy it, as the stock market crash soon followed, followed by the Great Depression. The box was exhibited as an exhibit at exhibitions until it was acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston with anonymously donated finances.
Beginning his career in 1917, Edward Oakes created many other fine pieces. In his work, he often used diamonds, sapphires, emeralds and other stones, which he carefully placed among tiny hand-made leaves. He was a member of the Goldsmiths Guild and in 1923 received a medal for his achievements from the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts.
