Ring of a grieving mother: the tragic story of an ancient Roman artifact
Precious jewelry keeps many secrets. In some they hid poisons, in others – weapons. A third served as a reminder of loved ones. The history of this ring, which is now kept in the National Archaeological Museum of Palestrina in Italy, is very tragic.

The ancient Roman ring, decorated with a wax figurine of a young man, was very unusual for its time. The play of light, refraction, created the effect of a hologram. There was a feeling that the depicted young man named Titus Carvilius Gemellus was looking from the depths of centuries.

Titus' mother made a custom-made sculpture of her dead son and wore a ring with his image on her finger all her life. It was a reminder of the most beloved person in her life. It so happened that a woman was buried with this decoration on her finger. After all, even after her death, she wanted to be with her child.
The ring on the hand of the wealthy matron Ebutia Quarta was found by archaeologists in 2001 in the Roman environs. The remains of a grieving mother were found in an unlooked tomb from the early 1st century AD, which housed two marble sarcophagi.

Archaeologists managed to establish that the young man died first, as indicated by the inscriptions on the sarcophagus. Probably, the cause of death was blood poisoning as a result of the injury – in the skeleton of a young man, one of the femurs was broken in two places. Although the possibility of poisoning was not ruled out, after all, a study of preserved hair showed the presence of a high amount of arsenic.
Jewelry with a history can also be found on the Violity website in the section "Ancient and medieval objects (before 1700.)".
