Ceremonial miliarision of Constant II and Constantine IV

Ceremonial miliarision of Constant II and Constantine IV

Dear readers! In our previous article, we presented the ceremonial miliarision of Emperor Constant II  sold on Violity briefly described the history of the reign emperor, a map of the Byzantine Empire of that period is presented. Today's article is dedicated to another ceremonial miliarision  which depicts Constant II and his son and heir, the future Emperor Constantine IV.
And here we come to the history of our coin. Ceremonial miliaris were not minted for mass circulation, they were donated coins. Very often, such gifts were presented to the leaders and elite of hostile peoples who agreed to peace with Byzantium or to allies who helped in the fight against such tribes and peoples. The coin was minted in 659-668, and in 658 Constant II, with the support of the Bulgarians, carried out a successful campaign against the Balkan Slavs, the place where the coin was found was the Chernivtsi region. To whom the coin was presented - the Slavs, who agreed to make peace, the Bulgarians or even the late Antes, who have already disappeared from the historical chronicles, but could still exist and traditionally support Byzantium in the fight against the Slavs, we will never know. But what is absolutely certain is that over the past decade, collectors could purchase the best copies of Byzantine coins in this section of Violity.
