Photos of ancient Mayan ruins by Alfred Maudsley
The English explorer Alfred Maudsley was one of the first Europeans who devoted his life to the study of the Mayan civilization. The archaeologist studied the ruins during the last decades of the 19th century, during which time he participated in six expeditions. He took a camera on a trip to photograph ancient structures. The scientist began his research path by visiting two cities: Quirigua (a place where trade routes crossed) and Copan (a large city located on the territory of Honduras). Maudsley hired a group of workers to help him study buildings and artifacts.
Later, the archaeologist went to the ruins of the city of Yaxchilan. He was the first to describe in detail what was left of the stately buildings: the city stood out for its imposing architecture and a large number of beautiful sculptures. Access to Yaxchilan is very difficult due to the mountainous landscape, so it was closed to travelers for many years. In the 1880s Maudsley visited Chichen Itza: here part of the city was built by the Maya, and part (later buildings) belongs to the Toltec culture. Here, the researcher took dozens of pictures using the then-new gelatin-silver photoprocess technology invented by Richard Maddox.
The result of his travels was numerous notes, which Maudsley collected together, and in 1902 he published a five-volume collection of texts called "Biologia Centrali-Americana". A few years later, the archaeologist took up the translation of the autobiographical chronicle of the Spanish conquistador Bernal del Castillo "The True Story of the Conquest of New Spain", written in the 16th century. Lovers of valuable old photographs of architecture will find dozens of interesting lots on Violity.
