Ukrainian craftswomen used various techniques when decorating embroidery. But the vestibule seams on the element of the Ukrainian national costume looked special. What is the secret of this technique?
The history of vestibule embroidery has not been fully studied. It is believed that the vestibule seam was used simultaneously in different parts of our planet. At least it is impossible to establish precisely in which country vestibule embroidery appeared for the first time.
Tambourine embroidery was used by Middle Eastern craftsmen, and in Ancient Rome, and Greece. The first samples of fabrics embroidered with a vestibule were discovered two thousand years ago. Of course, in the development, certain performance techniques appeared, the character of the embroidered patterns, their colors were formed. Vestibule embroidery acquired national characteristics.
Tambourine embroidery, as evidenced by the lots from the "Shirts, embroidered shirts" section, has always been distinguished by its colorfulness. The contour contrasting with the background enhanced the decorative effect. Threads that differ from the background in color made it possible to create linear or rosette patterns. Floral and plant ornaments — fruits, leaves, trees, flowers, which were supplemented with objects that surrounded the craftswoman. It could be brushes, drops, hooks, etc.
Interestingly, at first the vestibule seam was used as an addition to the main embroidery. He helped to "outline" the contours of certain patterns. But the simplicity of execution, the variety of decorative possibilities made the technique of vestibule embroidery universal among craftsmen.
The embroiderers of Kharkiv Oblast, Sumy Oblast, Poltava Oblast and Chernihiv Oblast were especially fond of vestibule embroidery. The relief pattern of embroidery, embroidered thanks to this technique, created a special play of light. The tambour seam added to the integrity of the whole composition: the stitches were links of one chain.
Revival of the traditions of wearing embroidered shirts is in trend today. But collectors of old national clothes see it differently. Shirts embroidered by vestibule in the past are unique exhibits that any collection can be proud of.
