Thorvaldsen Museum: collection of the Danish sculptor

In Copenhagen (Denmark) is the Thorvaldsen Museum, which houses a collection of works by the artist and sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. In total, there are about 20 thousand different items in the exhibition. The collection is based on the works of Thorvaldsen himself: his drawings, plaster sculptures, graphics. There are works by other authors acquired by the artist, as well as coins, books, and precious stones. Already in the first days after the opening of the museum, which took place in September 1848, the cultural institution was visited daily by more than 1,500 visitors.

Bertel Thorvaldsen was a representative of the late classicism, created a huge number of sculptures in which he reflected various ancient subjects. His works were very popular, the orders came from the monarchs and aristocrats from all over Europe, for which he was created a personal busts. The author also addressed the biblical theme. The Thorvaldsen Museum was opened four years after his death, and the building was originally intended to be a mausoleum.
