The famous collector Bernard Eckstein was born in 1894, was a talented leader: he managed a syndicate of Sudanese plantations where cotton was grown, was a partner of the mining company Wernher, Beit & Co, operating in South Africa. He inherited the Oldlands estate, which he rebuilt, combining elements of classicism and modernism. During the Second World War, he was engaged in financial support of various foundations. He supported the British Museum by presenting two Persian paintings on the eve of the war. However, one of the most important gifts was Meissen and Sevres porcelain. In addition, he collected books, Chinese jade figurines, paintings, which were sold after his death at various auctions.
