Between Salzburg and Carinthia (Austria), the Großglockner road runs through the mountains, which was built in the first half of the XX century. After the First World War, the Austrian economy was going through far from the best of times, so even simple projects with a narrow roadway were too expensive for the country. And yet it was decided to start construction, and to make up for the costs later by paying for the use of the way. The construction lasted for four years. After the opening, motorcycle and automobile competitions were held here, the rest of the time travelers actively used the road. After two new highways were built in the 60-70s of the last century, the congestion of the Grossglockner road decreased significantly and it turned into a local landmark. Nowadays it is used as an excursion road with beautiful panoramas. Vintage photos of the last century with landscapes can be found here.
